Mgahinga National park for volcanoes hike and Golden monkeys

Mgahinga Gorilla National ParkMgahinga Gorilla National Park is a spectacular protected area in southwestern Uganda, in Kisoro District. Although it is Uganda’s smallest national park, covering about 33.7 km², it offers some of the country’s most remarkable experiences, especially mountain gorilla trekking, golden monkey tracking and volcano hiking.+1

Mgahinga forms part of the Virunga Conservation Area, together with protected areas in Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Its landscape is dominated by three Virunga volcanoes: Mount Muhabura, Mount Gahinga and Mount Sabinyo.

Main attractions and activities

Gorilla trekking

Mgahinga is home to mountain gorillas and offers visitors the opportunity to trek through montane forest in search of these endangered primates.

Golden monkey trackingMgahinga is particularly important for golden monkeys and is the only Ugandan national park where this rare primate can be tracked.

Volcano hikingAdventure seekers can climb Mount Sabinyo, Mount Gahinga and Mount Muhabura, experiencing changing vegetation, dramatic volcanic scenery and panoramic views.

Batwa cultural experience

The Batwa have a deep historical connection with the forest. A cultural experience provides an opportunity to learn about their traditional forest knowledge, history and way of life. Garama Cave is one of the sites associated with the Batwa heritage of the area.

Bird watching

The park supports a rich variety of forest birds, including species associated with the Albertine Rift.

Why visit Mgahinga?

Mgahinga is ideal for travelers looking for a combination of gorilla trekking, primate encounters, mountain hiking, cultural experiences and spectacular volcanic scenery. Its relatively small size also makes it possible to combine several experiences in a well-planned Uganda safari. For your Malidadi Africa Safaris website, I would recommend presenting Mgahinga as a destination alongside Bwindi, Queen Elizabeth, Kibale and Murchison Falls, particularly for visitors interested in Uganda gorilla and primate safaris.
