Main attractions at Lake Mburo

1. Wildlife and game drives

Lake Mburo offers excellent opportunities to see zebras, impalas, eland, buffaloes, topi, warthogs, waterbuck and reedbuck. Leopards and hyenas are also present, although they can be more difficult to spot.

One of the park’s special attractions is the impala, as Lake Mburo is the only place in Uganda where this species naturally occurs.

2. Lake Mburo boat safari

A boat cruise on Lake Mburo provides a completely different safari experience. Visitors can see hippos and crocodiles along the shoreline, while the lake and surrounding wetlands attract numerous water birds. Possible sightings include African fish eagles, herons, pelicans and African finfoot.

Lake Mburo is particularly famous for its large numbers of Burchell’s zebras. Seeing zebras grazing across the open savannah is one of the highlights of a visit.

4. Bird watching

The park is an excellent destination for bird lovers, with more than 315 bird species recorded. Its combination of acacia woodland, papyrus wetlands, open savannah and lakes provides diverse habitats for birds.

5. Walking safaris

Lake Mburo is one of Uganda’s best places for a guided walking safari. Accompanied by a ranger, visitors can explore the savannah on foot and observe wildlife, tracks, plants and smaller creatures at close range. UWA specifically highlights walking safaris as one of the park’s distinctive experiences.

6. Night game drives

A night drive provides the opportunity to search for nocturnal wildlife such as bushbabies, pottos, hyenas and possibly leopards.

7. Salt Lick Walk

The guided Salt Lick Walk takes visitors towards a natural salt-lick area where wildlife can often be observed from a viewing platform.

8. Rubanga Forest

Rubanga Forest offers a different environment from the open savannah and is particularly interesting for forest birding and nature walks.

9. Horseback safari

Horseback safaris allow visitors to explore the park’s landscapes while riding through areas inhabited by wildlife. This can be a memorable alternative to a conventional vehicle safari.

10. Scenic viewpoints

Kigarama Hill and Kazuma Lookout provide impressive panoramic views across Lake Mburo and the surrounding countryside. From Kazuma, visitors can see several lakes in the wider landscape.

11. Cultural experiencesCommunities around the park provide opportunities to learn about Ankole culture and traditional Banyankore life, including local homesteads and traditional ways of living.
